If you're planning a trip from Nice airport (NCE) to Saint-Tropez by car or rental, you should be aware that you'll pay €9.50 for two sections (€3.50 + €6) of the A8 toll motorway and approximately €15 for diesel fuel (one way).

You can take toll-free roads (for example, along the seaside), in which case you won't pay €9.50, but the journey will take an extra 1.5 hours and you'll pay more for fuel, as fuel consumption in towns and villages with many traffic lights and intersections will be significantly higher.
We drove the main route via the A8 motorway from Nice Airport to Saint-Tropez city center to accurately calculate all travel costs and learn what and how to pay. We drove a Mercedes C-Class with a 2.0-liter diesel engine, averaging 5.5 liters per 100 km on the highway and 7 liters per 100 km in city traffic.
It's important to know that if you don't drive your own car, but take a private transfer from Nice Airport to Saint-Tropez, you don't pay for fuel or toll roads. However, if you take a taxi, tolls are included in the price, but you'll have to pay extra for toll roads.
We paid the toll between Nice and Saint-Tropez at two places. The first toll plaza was between Antibes and Cannes (3.5 €), and the second toll plaza was after the A8 exit (6.0 €), near the town of Le Muy. In total, we paid 3.50 € + 6.0 € = 9.5 €.
From there, we took the regular, free motorway all the way to Saint-Tropez.
There are two alternative routes if you want to save money on the toll.
After Cannes, head west, but don't reach Le Muy; instead, turn off for Fréjus. After exiting the motorway, you pay 3.0 euros, and the rest of your journey is free.
Sometimes people just drive along the embankment through all the villages and towns, then there is no need to pay anything for the road, it is free, but the road takes about 3.5 - 4.5 hours, and fuel consumption also increases.
The toll plazas we passed on our way to Saint-Tropez have several types of gates:
Reserve telepeage (orange) - there are usually no queues here, you can ride without stopping to pay. However, this can only be done if you have a special device in your car, a telepeage badge/toll tag (this is purchased in advance). A sensor detects it, and you continue on, with the fee deducted from your account later. If you don't have a toll tag, you can't pass through these gates: either the barrier won't open and you'll have to reverse, or you'll receive a bill and likely a fine.
Gates where you can't pay in cash (NO CASH), only with a card or telepeage badge.
There are gates where you can pay in cash: banknotes or coins.
Gates with a vehicle height limit of 2 meters (white and red lines). If you're driving a tall van or bus, you won't be able to pass through them.
Some gates are closed and have a red cross above them. Don't approach them; you'll waste your time.
Be careful and choose the gate you need in advance so you can pass through them without causing traffic jams or accidents at the toll booths.
When it's your turn, you'll arrive at a payment machine. The display will show the amount to be paid (e.g., €3.50).
The machine has a bank card reader, a banknote slot, and a small coin slot (if it's a cash gate). There are also buttons to contact the operator (in French, English, German, Spanish, and Italian) if you have any problems with payment.
Toll plazas can be jammed during peak season or in the morning and evening (when locals are heading to and from work).
Traffic is especially heavy if several gates are down. You can spend an additional 20-40 minutes on this payment. Please take this into account if you don't want to miss your flight.
View the summary table of road prices to choose the best road to take:
| Route | Toll Price | Travel Time | Road Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| A8 Motorway (main route) | 9.50 € (3.5+6.0)€ | 1.5–2 hours | This is the fastest route from Nice Airport to Saint-Tropez. It runs along the A8 motorway, past Le Muy and towards the sea. |
| Via Frejus | 6.50 € (3.5+3.0)€ | 2–2.5 hours | An alternative route that costs less but takes longer. From the A8 motorway, exit at the Frejus exit. |
| Free coastal route | 0 € | 3.5–4 hours | A very picturesque route along the seashore, without toll roads, but very long. |
The second cost item for travel is diesel, gasoline, or electricity. Of course, this also needs to be taken into account to determine the total cost of the trip.
We drove to Saint-Tropez from Nice in a Mercedes C-Class. It consumes about 5.5 liters of diesel on the highway, and about 7 liters in traffic and around town.
We filled up beforehand at an ESSO station not on the highway. We bought Supreme Gasole, which costs €2,358 per liter.
However, on the highway, you can buy diesel for much more; we saw a Shell station on the A8, where the price for a good liter of diesel was €2,740. Therefore, we recommend filling up in the city in advance, not on the highway, as this will significantly save you money on the trip.
But, if you forget to fill up in advance, gas stations on the highway are easy to find. 1.5 km or closer, you'll see special signs on the right-hand side of the road.
You can also buy food and drink at the gas station, use the restroom, and take a short walk to rest.
The cost of electricity for charging electric cars is approximately 0.17 - 1.0 euros per 1 kW
You will spend different amounts on cars with different types of fuel and volumes of fuel consumption.
Consumption: 5.5 liters (highway) / 7 liters (city)
Diesel price: €2,358
Highway distance: 88 km
City distance: 18 km
One-way diesel consumption:
88 km x 5.5 liters/100 km + 18 km x 7 liters/100 km = 4.84 + 1.26 = 6.10 liters
Total diesel cost for the round trip:
6.10 liters * €2,358 * 2 ways = €14.38 * 2 = €28.76
If you refuel on the motorway, the result will be worse. For clarity, we've created a table with fuel cost calculations.
Consumption: 10 liters (highway) / 13 liters (city)
Diesel price: €2,358 Euros
Highway distance: 88 km
City distance: 18 km
Diesel fuel consumption for a one-way van trip:
88 km x 10 l/100 km + 18 km x 13 l/100 km = 8.8 + 2.34 = 11.14 l
Total diesel fuel cost for a round-trip van trip:
11.14 l * €2.358 * 2 trips = €26.27 * 2 = €52.54
Consumption: 8 liters (highway) / 12 liters (city)
Price of SP95 gasoline = €1,990 (city)
Highway distance: 88 km
City distance: 18 km
One-way fuel consumption:
88 km x 7 liters/100 km + 18 km x 12 liters/100 km = 6.16 + 2.16 = 8.32 liters
Total cost of diesel fuel for a round-trip:
8.32 liters * €1,990 * 2 trips = €16.56 * 2 = €33.12
Average electricity consumption: 0.35 kWh/km
One-way distance: 106 km
106 km * 0.35 kWh/km * 2 directions = 37.1 kWh * 2 = 74.2 kWh (approximate roundtrip consumption).
On the motorway, 1 kWh = €1
So, for a roundtrip, you'll pay 74.2 kWh * €1 = €74.2
In the city during the day, 1 kWh = €0.4
Roundtrip: 74.2 kWh * €0.4 = €29.68
In the city at night, 1 kWh = €0.17
Roundtrip: 74.2 kWh * €0.17 = €12.61
We've calculated the total cost of all travel expenses from Nice Airport to Saint-Tropez and back to help you plan your trip.
| Vehicle | Fuel Type | Round Trip Consumption | City Fuel / Charging Cost | Motorway Fuel / Charging Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes C-Class | Diesel | 12.2 liters | €28.76 | €33.43 |

| Volkswagen Passat | Petrol / Gasoline | 16.64 liters | €33.12 | €45.60 |
| Tesla Model S | Electric | 74.2 kWh | €12.61 | €74.20 |
The round-trip costs from Nice Airport to Saint-Tropez, for different types of cars, different fuel types, different places of purchase, and different route options, including toll road costs, are:
