2. Route from Malpensa airport Milano to St Moritz: distance, driving time and toll roads.

There are two main routes from Milan and Malpensa Airport to St. Moritz: via Lake Como and the Maloja Pass – more scenic and touristy; via the A36 motorway and the Bernina Pass – more direct and convenient in winter.

1) Road via Lake Como and the Maloja Pass:

Length: approximately 175 km. Travel time: approximately 3–3.5 hours. Highlights: mountain serpentines, panoramic views

The journey begins at Malpensa Airport. After leaving the airport, take the A9 motorway towards Como. The route then runs along the lake's western shore, passing through the picturesque towns of Menaggio and Colico, offering stunning views of the Alpine slopes. After Colico, the climb into the mountains begins. After a few dozen kilometers, you cross the Italian-Swiss border near the town of Chiavenno and continue along the Maloja Pass, which leads directly to the valley of the resort town of St. Moritz. The road along the pass is quite winding, but it is quite safe and well-groomed even in winter. In clear weather, views of the glaciers and lakes of the Upper Engadine open up. This route is ideal for hikers who want to combine travel and enjoying nature.

2) The A36 Motorway and the Bernina Pass:

Length: 185–190 km. Travel time: approximately 3.5–4 hours. Highlights: fewer turns, higher speed.

If you prefer a more direct route, take the A36 Pedemontana Lombarda, which leads through the towns of Sondrio and Tirano. You'll then cross the Swiss border near Poschiavo, climb the Bernina Pass, and then descend into the St. Moritz Valley. In winter, this route is still more attractive than the Maloja route, as it's less likely to be closed due to snowfall. Toll roads in Italy cost approximately €10–20, depending on the vehicle and route.

7. How long does it take to get from St Moritz to Milan?

The drive from Milan or Malpensa Airport to St. Moritz in winter typically takes 3.5 to 4 hours, but on certain dates and times the drive can take significantly longer—up to 4.5 – 5 hours. This is due not only to weather conditions but also to seasonal traffic patterns in the Alps.

Average drive time:

  • From Milan city center: 3 hours 15 minutes in calm conditions
  • From Malpensa Airport (MXP): approximately 3 hours 45 minutes
  • During the winter season (December–March): 4 to 5 hours
  • During peak season: 4,5 to 5 hours

The main part of the route runs along the A8 and SS36 motorways through Como, then along mountain roads leading over the Maloja Pass or Bernina Pass. During the winter months, these areas may be covered in snow and ice, reducing travel speeds and potentially imposing travel restrictions on the passes.

So, which dates are most likely to increase transfer times?

The busiest periods of the ski season are from December 20th to January 8th, and every weekend from mid-December to the end of February. During these periods, tourists from all over the world flock to the Alpine resorts, and traffic jams often form on the A9 and SS36 highways in the Como and Chiavenna area, especially in the morning from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM and in the evening from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

The school holidays in Europe and Italy (late February to early March) can also add several hours to the journey. During these periods, there is increased traffic on mountain roads, especially on the winding sections of the Maloja Pass.

Weather conditions also affect winter transfer times. Snowfalls are common on the Maloja and Bernina Passes, especially in January and February. Then, traffic becomes one-way in some places, adding 1-2 hours to the journey.

Since the transfer crosses the border between Italy and Switzerland, delays are possible. In the Campocologino and Chiavenna areas, queues form at passport control on Saturdays, adding 30-45 minutes to the transfer time during peak season.

We recommend taking these local conditions into account when planning your transfer dates and times.

9. About taxi from Malpensa airport or Milano to St Moritz:

Travelers arriving at Malpensa Airport or staying in Milan before traveling to St. Moritz can use a taxi service. This option is generally suitable for those who don't want to be tied to train and bus schedules and value their time.

Taxi service from Malpensa airport Milano to St Moritz.

Taxi to St Moritz from Malpensa Airport:

Upon arrival at Milan Malpensa International Airport (MXP), you'll find plenty of taxis outside Terminals T1 and T2. Taxi stands are marked with special signs, and the taxis are white with identification plates and a license number.

However, it's important to note that taxis from Malpensa to St. Moritz don't have a fixed price, as the route is international and the journey passes through mountainous terrain and the Swiss border. The average route distance is approximately 180-190 km, and the travel time is 3.5-4 hours, depending on the season and traffic conditions.

Taxi price to St Moritz from Malpensa airport:

  • Economy Sedan (up to 3 passengers) - from €550
  • Minivan (up to 7 passengers) - from €680
  • Business Class (Mercedes E) - from €750

Taxi to St Moritz from Milan center:

If you're staying in Milan and picking up from your hotel, the fare will be slightly lower than from the Malpensa airport, as the route is approximately 15 km shorter. The average travel time is 3 - 3.5 hours.

Approximate taxi price to St Moritz from Milan city:

  • Economy sedan - from €530
  • Minivan (5-7 passengers) - from €660
  • Business and premium class (Mercedes E or V class) - from €730

Please note that few taxi drivers speak basic English, as most are Italian. Therefore, if you're traveling for the first time, it's best to book a transfer in advance with a company with English-speaking drivers.

Taxis can be booked through special apps, websites, or by phone, but these services rarely confirm trips abroad. Important: Swiss taxis are not allowed to pick up passengers in Italy, so the return trip from St. Moritz to Milan must also be booked in advance.

Taxis operate on a meter, which is often more expensive, especially on holidays or during heavy snowfall, when traffic on mountain roads slows down. Therefore, pre-booking a private transfer remains the most reliable option.

Why pre-booking a transfer is more advantageous then taxi:

  • Guaranteed fixed price, agreed upon well in advance
  • Lower price than taxi services
  • Car delivered to your flight or departure time
  • English-speaking driver
  • Option to select the class and capacity of the car in advance
  • Free waiting at the airport for 1 hour after flight arrival
  • Complimentary provision of child seats and booster seats upon request

Some lines (especially STPS and PostBus) operate on a reduced schedule in winter, meaning from November to March, the number of departures may be reduced to 1–2 per day. Therefore, it's important to check the current schedule in advance on the carriers' websites: flixbus.com, postauto.ch, stps.it

4) More about types and classes of cars for transfer Milan to St Moritz

Cars are divided into different classes and types depending on their size, functionality, and comfort. Explore this information to help you choose the right car for your transfer from Milan or Malpensa Airport to St. Moritz.

Choosing a class and capacity of the car for transfer from Milan to St Moritz

Car capacity:

Economy class. This class of vehicle is the optimal choice for travelers who are unpretentious in comfort, value safety without unnecessary luxury, and are not keen on excessive spending. Economy class transfers typically use modern, reliable models such as the Volkswagen Jetta, Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Fiat Scudo. Despite their economy segment status, these vehicles provide a comfortable travel experience on short and medium-distance routes (up to 200 km). The seats are quite ergonomic, with fabric or combination upholstery, adjustable in height and backrest tilt. The interior is designed in neutral, usually dark, tones, this is a practical option for travel.

Comfort Class. Cars in this class strike a happy medium between an affordable economy car and the business segment. They are suitable for those who value comfort, reliability, and a smooth ride during long trips on mountain roads, yet aren't willing to overpay for unnecessary comfort. The most common cars in this class are the Volkswagen Passat, Tesla S, Skoda Superb, Renault Trafic, and Ford Tourneo. The main difference between the comfort class and economy class is the improved interior quality, sound insulation, and driving performance. The seats are upholstered in more expensive materials, often with heating. Zoned climate control may be available.

Business Class. Business class cars embody status and thoughtful comfort down to the last detail. These cars are chosen by travelers who value not only reliability and safety, but also a high level of comfort, style, and privacy. For transfers to the Alps, we use premium brand vehicles, such as the Mercedes E-Class and Mercedes Vito. The hallmark of business class vehicles is their luxurious and intimate atmosphere. The interiors of these vehicles are designed with meticulous attention to detail, creating a sense of tranquility and a high level of service. The interior trim includes genuine leather, wood, or aluminum trim. Seats often feature integrated memory, heating, and other functions. Not to mention zoned climate control, excellent sound insulation, professional acoustics, and other amenities.

Premium Class. Premium vehicles are the epitome of comfort and technical excellence. Every element of these vehicles is designed not only for driving, but also to make the journey a special occasion. Premium class is the choice of the most discerning clients, for whom the highest level of service is more important than price. For premium class transfers, we use flagship models from leading brands, such as the Mercedes S-Class and Mercedes V-Class. What distinguishes the premium class from the rest is its attention to detail. Here, every passenger will feel like they're in a business jet cabin. The trim materials are the most luxurious: genuine leather, rare wood veneers, and polished aluminum elements. The interior trim colors are often light, adding an even more luxurious touch. The seats are equipped with adjustable controls, a footrest, ventilation, massage, and a memory function. Climate control, lighting, sound systems, and noise cancellation are top-notch.

By capacity, cars can be categorized as sedans, SUVs, minivans, and buses:

Sedans. This body type is the choice for small groups of travelers with minimal luggage. Most sedans are designed to accommodate 3-4 passengers and 2-3 medium-sized (M-L) suitcases. The sedan's trunk is spacious enough for standard travel luggage, but if you have skis or snowboards, you'll likely need a vehicle with a larger cargo area or a sports equipment rack, although this isn't always possible. Typical models of this body type include the Volkswagen Passat, Toyota Camry, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes E/C/S Class, and Audi A4.

SUVs. Modern SUVs are designed to seat 4-5 passengers, while still providing enough space for 4-5 medium-sized suitcases and some additional sports equipment. This body type is represented by the following models: Hyundai Santa Fe, BMW X5, and Volvo XC90.

Minivans. This body type is designed to transport medium-sized groups of passengers without sacrificing comfort or luggage capacity. They can accommodate 7-8 people, up to 8 medium-sized suitcases, and 3-4 sets of ski equipment in soft cases (less in hard cases). Thanks to the flexible seating configuration, the minivan's interior can be rearranged: for example, to create more space for suitcases or sports equipment if not all the seats are occupied. Luggage capacity can be increased by attaching a trailer. Examples of this body type include the Fiat Scudo, Renault Trafic, Mercedes Vito, and V Class.

Minibuses. These can transport the largest groups of passengers: from 9 to 20 people. The most prominent example is the Mercedes Sprinter, which is available in several configurations, allowing you to find the perfect option for almost any group. This vehicle can accommodate up to 18 suitcases of various sizes, as well as a fair amount of ski equipment. If this is too much, minibuses can be equipped with a trailer.

The history of St. Moritz dates back centuries. Its mineral springs are said to have been known even to the ancient Romans. The resort's modern history began in the 19th century, when a British traveler named Johannes Badrutt invited his guests to spend the winter in the mountains. Thus, according to legend, winter tourism was born, and St. Moritz became Europe's first winter resort and even twice hosted the Winter Olympics (in 1928 and 1948). Today, it is considered one of the most glamorous Alpine destinations, rivaling Courchevel.
