Taxi or private transfer from Cannes to Saint-Tropez: which is better?

Many tourists believe that a taxi from Cannes to Saint-Tropez is inferior to a private transfer. Taxis are more expensive, the number of types and classes of their cars is very small and the level of comfort is not high. The only advantage of taxis is that you can walk in and out of the airport without booking in advance (however, they are not always available).

Disadvantages of official taxi from Cannes to Saint-Tropez:

  1. A taxi from Cannes to Saint-Tropez is considered one of the most expensive ways to get to the resort. The cost of a trip usually starts from around €360 for a regular passenger car and around €410 for a minivan for 6-7 passengers. During periods of heavy traffic, the final amount may be significantly higher. For comparison, a pre-booked private transfer costs from €165 for an Economy Class sedan and from €230 for a minivan with a capacity of up to 8 passengers.
  2. One of the main disadvantages of taxis is that the cost of the trip is calculated only after it is completed. Since the price depends on distance, travel time and traffic conditions, passengers often do not know the exact amount in advance.
  3. Unlike a private transfer, when traveling by taxi it is not possible to choose a specific class or model of car. Typically, a passenger gets into the first available car in the airport parking lot.
  4. The condition and cleanliness of cars can vary greatly. Especially during peak season, the quality of service is not always consistent.
  5. For foreign tourists, the language barrier can also be an inconvenience. Although many drivers are professionals in their field, not all of them speak English.
  6. Taxi drivers usually wait for customers at the official taxi stand, not at the hotel entrance, so passengers are forced to look for a taxi themselves if they are unable to call one.
  7. Families with small children should keep in mind that not all taxis have child seats, and it is difficult to predict their availability.n.
  8. For large groups of travelers, finding a suitable vehicle may take additional time. Most taxis are regular passenger cars, while spacious minivans are much less common and are especially in demand during the summer months.

Advantages of taxi:

One of the advantages of taking a taxi from Cannes to Saint-Tropez is the ability to take a taxi immediately, without pre-booking. You can leave the hotel and simply get into a taxi waiting at the parking lot.

However, this convenience does not always save time. During peak season, there are often long lines at the taxi stand. The wait for a free car can last 20–30 minutes or more. This happens especially often on weekends, holidays, and during the peak summer season, when the number of people wanting to rent clearly exceeds the number of available cars.

When booking a private transfer, a vehicle is assigned to you in advance. The driver will be waiting at your hotel door at the designated time, the type of vehicle is known in advance, and the fare is fixed before the journey begins. This transfer option is often not only more comfortable, but also more affordable than official taxis.

Taxi vs private transfer (main differences):

Let's sum it up and compare the pros and cons of taxis and transfers. The choice of a private transfer to get from Cannes to Saint-Tropez is absolutely obvious.

9. Other important information about transfers from Cannes to Saint-Tropez:

To ensure your transfer is as comfortable as possible and to help you reach Saint-Tropez from Cannes quickly and without any hassle, we recommend reading the information section below.

1) How to meet your driver at the hotel or apartment

Meeting your driver at a hotel or apartment:

Driver waiting in a car outside a Saint-Tropez hotel
Your driver waits in the car outside the hotel in Saint-Tropez

If you are traveling back from the hotel to the airport or to another city, the driver will meet you at reception with a sign and help you with your suitcases. Some hotels or apartments do not have parking facilities (especially in the city center), in which case the driver waits for passengers in the car and drives up to the doors just before people are boarding, stopping for a couple of minutes just for boarding. The transfer price includes a 15-20 minute wait at the hotel from the agreed departure time. Next you will also need to pay 60 - 90 euros per hour.

Travel Tip about meeting your driver:
  • I highly recommend enabling roaming on your phone in advance and contacting the driver via WhatsApp the day before the transfer. This is necessary so that you and the driver can find each other faster and with the least amount of hassle. On the day of the transfer, send the driver your location via WhatsApp. This way, they'll be able to find you easily, even if you don't see the sign.
  • If you need to make an additional stop after meeting at the airport or hotel (for example, to go shopping or visit a tourist attraction), please inform the operator in advance. Send all the addresses where you need to go, at least a day in advance, and better yet, earlier. If you make route changes on the day of your trip, the driver may not be able to accommodate them, as they will already have a subsequent transfer scheduled, for which we may not be able to assign a different vehicle.

2) What you need to know about luggage when booking a transfer

Suitcases and strollers loaded into the trunk of a Mercedes V-Class for a transfer from Cannes
Suitcases and strollers in the trunk of a Mercedes V-Class

Please pay close attention to your luggage information when booking a transfer from Cannes to Saint-Tropez. You need to describe to our operator in as much detail as possible how many suitcases you have, what size they are, and whether they are soft or hard. Also, describe in detail all your carry-on luggage, because one small bag won't take up much space, but if you have 5 or 10 of them, they can make a significant difference.

We need to know the exact specifications of your luggage in advance so we can select a car for you that will have enough space for you to travel comfortably and for all your belongings to fit in the trunk. Otherwise, some of your bags may not fit in the trunk and you'll have to carry them on foot, or you'll have to order a second car and pay extra for it, and two small cars always cost more in total than one large van.

Standard luggage dimensions:

Suitcase sizes are categorized by their height, width, and depth (please provide these to our operator). They are usually divided into several standard categories, depending on the size: S, M, L and XL. Parameters may vary slightly between manufacturers, but the most common sizes are as follows:

  • Size S (small suitcase): height 48–53 cm, width 32–35 cm, depth 20–23 cm.
  • Size M (medium suitcase): height 58–63 cm, width 39–42 cm, depth 23–26 cm.
  • Size L (large suitcase): height 65–70 cm, width 47–50 cm, depth 26–29 cm.
  • Size XL (extra-large suitcase): height 74–80 cm, width 51–54 cm, depth 30–32 cm.

Hand luggage and other items:

Passengers take with them (in addition to suitcases): bags, purses, packages, backpacks, sports equipment, children's toys, musical instruments, carriers with dogs or cats, wheelchairs and much, much more. All of this must be described when booking a transfer. Sometimes these things can take up more space than what is in the suitcases. Unfortunately, we have encountered many times that tourists arrive with luggage that is clearly larger than what they described. Because of this, they take a second car on site, and if our cars are busy, clients order a taxi as a car for luggage - its cost is usually much higher than a transfer.

Travel Tip about luggage:
Photo of clients bags sent to the driver to check whether they will fit in the vehicle
A photo of luggage sent to the driver

It's often difficult to measure all your suitcases. And it's not always clear whether a large suitcase is L or XL. Or how big are bags or backpacks? In such cases, you can send our operator a photo of your suitcases and bags together. Then we can estimate their volume and select a car with the required trunk for you.

3) Traveling with children: child seat options and requirements

Child seat and booster seat installed on the rear seat of a transfer vehicle
A child seat and booster installed before a family transfer

If you're traveling with small children, please inform our operator when booking your transfer. Each child must sit in his own separate seat and must never be carried in an adult's arms. If a child is less than 1.5 m tall, then (according to European Road Traffic Regulations) he or she must travel in a special child seat in the car.

If you order a vehicle that is designed to transport four passengers, please indicate that you require a transfer for 4 adults. But in fact, there will be 4 adults and 1 small child, you will have to order a second car. Unfortunately, this sometimes happens - transfers cannot be carried out without violating the transportation rules.

Available child seat types:

Learn about the different types of child seats. This can be important when preparing for your transfer.

Table to choosing a child car seat for private transfers
Child weight Approximate age Recommended seat type
Up to 13 kg 0–18 months Baby seat (Group 0 / 0+)
9–18 kg 1–4 years Child seat (Group 1)
15–25 kg 3–7 years Child seat (Group 2)
22–36 kg 6–12 years Booster or high-back booster (Group 3)
Travel Tip about child seats:

If you are traveling with a small baby, under 1 year old, it is better to take your own carry cot with you. This makes it more convenient to carry your child at the airport and after the transfer. But if you are taking your own bassinet, please be sure to mention this when booking the transfer. Otherwise, the driver may also bring our carrycot, which will reduce luggage space in the car.

4) How to choose the right vehicle for your transfer?

Several transfer vehicles available for passengers at Cannes
Several transfer vehicles at Cannes

Choosing the right car is an extremely important aspect of preparing for a trip. It ensures a comfortable transfer, allows for comfortable seating for all passengers, and allows for the transportation of all your luggage. When choosing a car, two criteria are generally taken into account: capacity and class of car.

Vehicle capacity:

For transfers from Cannes to Saint-Tropez, different types of cars are available: sedans, SUVs, vans and buses.

Small passenger cars are suitable for transporting 1-4 passengers with a moderate amount of luggage (usually 1-2 large suitcases and 1-2 small ones, plus small bags). This category of cars includes the Volkswagen Jetta, Ford Focus, Skoda Octavia, and similar models.

Large sedans and SUVs. These cars can comfortably seat four passengers. Their interiors are larger, and their trunks can accommodate more luggage (two to three large suitcases plus carry-on luggage). These include cars like the Volkswagen Passat, Skoda Kodiaq, and similar models.

Vans and minivans are designed to carry 5-8 passengers (although they are also often taken by 1-2 people who want more space). These vehicles are often ordered to accommodate large amounts of suitcases, bags, and other items. But their luggage compartments are different: the largest is in the Renault Trafic Extralong (up to 8 XL suitcases and hand luggage), or the Volkswagen Caravelle Extralong (approximately the same trunk). Short-wheelbase or simply Long-wheelbase vehicles hold less luggage. Mercedes vans have smaller luggage compartments, even if they are Extralong. The Mercedes V class can carry up to 7 passengers, and in some trim levels 4-6 passengers - the seats are comfortable, but there are usually fewer of them. The Renault Trafic and Volkswagen Caravelle can accommodate up to 8 passengers (plus a ninth driver's seat).

Buses are reserved for transporting large groups of 10, 14, 20, 40, or even 50 people. For example, Mercedes Sprinter or Scania. But not every hotel can be reached by large buses. Sometimes, only relatively small cars can navigate the old streets of downtown Saint-Tropez, so instead of one large bus, 2-4 vans are used for transportation.

Vehicle class:

The second parameter for choosing a vehicle for a transfer is the vehicle class. For many passengers it is sometimes the main one.

Economy class is the most affordable transfer option. This category includes small cars of inexpensive brands. They are suitable for passengers who are not very interested in demonstrating their status, as they say, "just getting there." Cars include Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf. But when choosing Economy, sometimes higher-class cars arrive if the transfer coincides with another order.

Comfort class implies a more spacious interior, improved sound insulation, and a higher quality of materials and equipment. This class includes: Volkswagen Passat, Tesla Model S, Toyota Camry, as well as Renault Trafic and Volkswagen Caravelle vans.

Business class is booked by passengers who value status and comfort, or by those who are simply accustomed to good cars. Mercedes E-Class cars and Mercedes Vito vans are available for them.

Premium class offers the most comfortable and spacious vehicles. The best materials in the cabin, space, technical equipment and a smooth ride. Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7, Audi A8 sedans and Mercedes V-Class vans (various seating configurations).

Tell our operator about your preferences, and we will select the optimal vehicle for your transfer from Cannes to Saint-Tropez. It's better to book a car in advance, then you have a higher chance of ordering a car of the desired class and size at the best price.

Travel Tip about choosing the vehicle:

Some tourists believe that vans are intended only for transporting large groups of people. But in fact, if you're traveling alone or as a couple, a van is very comfortable, especially the Mercedes V Class. The seats face each other, so you can recline the backrest and put your feet up on the opposite seat, or simply lie across all three seats and sleep. If the ride is long, more than an hour, you can even sleep.

5) What is the best way to get from Cannes to Saint-Tropez: train, bus, rental car, private transfer or helicopter?

We previously described the difference between a transfer and a taxi regarding travel from Cannes to Saint-Tropez. It is also important to understand the specifics of other modes of transport: train, bus, car rental or helicopter. Let's briefly review their characteristics, which are generally common to all European cities.

Train vs. private transfer:

The train is undoubtedly a convenient mode of transportation. It's usually 5-8 times cheaper than a transfer. It eliminates traffic jams as it goes along the railway. However, you need to get to the train from the airport by tram or bus. And most importantly, the train will never take you to the door of your hotel, no matter where it is located; you will have to get from the station by another form of transport. The train also has a strict schedule. For example, you cannot take a train at night to arrive at the airport early for your flight.

Bus vs. private transfer:

Scheduled bus returning from Saint-Tropez along the coastal road
A scheduled bus returning from Saint-Tropez along the scenic coastal road

The bus is a popular mode of transportation for many tourists, including those traveling from Cannes to Saint-Tropez. First of all, this is due to its relatively low price; it is approximately equal to a train ride. But the price is perhaps the only advantage compared to private transfers.

The bus also doesn't go directly from the airport to your hotel (you need to transfer to another bus, and then walk with your suitcases at the end). In traffic jams, the bus costs almost as much as the car ordered for the transfer. But because the bus makes many stops along the way and visits different cities, the travel time is often twice as long as that of a transfer. And you probably won't board the bus immediately after leaving the plane. The bus runs on schedule, which means you can wait for it at the stop for 10 minutes, or up to 2 hours (depending on the bus schedule).

Helicopter vs. private transfer:

Traveling by helicopter from Cannes to Saint-Tropez is elegant, fast, and comfortable. However, the price is usually significantly higher than a transfer. Secondly, you often can't fly directly to the hotel (most don't have their own helipads). You'll land at the nearest one, and then a transfer will take you to the hotel. Thirdly, the helicopter may be canceled due to adverse weather conditions.

Rental car vs. private transfer:

Renting a car at Cannes and driving to Saint-Tropez seems inexpensive and convenient. But in reality, this option is more expensive than it seems at first glance and is almost pointless if you want to stay in Saint-Tropez for your entire vacation and not travel to neighboring cities. In addition to the rental car, you'll have to pay for parking, insurance, fuel, and toll roads. This will ultimately cost you at least the cost of both transfers (one way and the other). But you'll have more hassle with parking and car registration, and you'll also have to drive on unfamiliar roads, navigating traffic jams during the high tourist season.

Final comparison of transportation options to Saint-Tropez:

Check the table to see which type of transport is best suited for which tourists to travel from Cannes to Saint-Tropez.

Comparison of different modes of transportation to your destination in Saint-Tropez
Transportation Mode Best for Restrictions
Private Transfer If you want to get there in comfort, right to your hotel door More expensive than a bus or train
Train If the schedule is more convenient Only available by train Get to your destination
Bus The most budget-friendly option Long drive and transfers
Rented car You can travel to other cities during your vacation Parking, fuel, insurance, and toll road costs
Helicopter If you need speed and exclusivity High cost and few landing sites

10. Uber from Cannes to Saint-Tropez: prices and availability.

An Uber car brought passengers from Cannes to Saint-Tropez
Uber car dropping off passengers in Saint-Tropez

Some tourists use Uber to get from Cannes to Saint-Tropez. It's a very popular service used by many tourists in many countries. However, it's important to understand that this service may not be suitable for every traveler.

Uber pricing:

If you look in the app, you can see a pretty good price to Saint-Tropez, for example 160-190 euros (sometimes even lower). But this price can increase.

Firstly, the price may change when you arrive at Cannes and log in to the app to book a car. Uber's price isn't fixed; it depends on demand at the time of booking, the time of day, traffic conditions, and the number of drivers available to fulfill your request.

Secondly, the price changes even during the trip itself, that is, after you've booked the car and started driving. If you hit a major traffic jam along the way (which is almost always the case during peak season), the price of your transfer will increase at the end of the trip. The exact amount is unknown in advance.

If you take a return transfer, that is, from your hotel in Saint-Tropez to the airport, then the price for Uber may be different, perhaps 15-20% higher (this should also be taken into account).

Uber availability during peak season:

The next important point is that during the high season, finding a free Uber car is not very easy; you may have to wait for a long time because the demand for cars is greater than the number of available drivers.

You may also not find a car that meets your exact requirements. For example, all economy class cars will be full, or you may only be able to book a car at a higher price. Vans for large groups may also be full. If you're flying with children, the availability of child seats in the cars is also not guaranteed.
