Sometimes the driver may choose to go around or take another route to avoid a traffic jam, reduce travel time and avoid being late for a flight or an important meeting for the passenger.

6. Car rental with a driver in Chamonix

Chamonix - driver waits for passengers during hourly car rental
Driver waits for passengers for an hourly trip in Chamonix

Sometimes travelers need not only a transfer from the airport to the hotel. Periodically tourists also order hourly car rental with a driver in Chamonix.

Personal driver services are convenient for business meetings, weddings, excursions, visiting restaurants, traveling within Chamonix itself and neighboring ski resorts or for shopping in outlets and shopping centers. The chauffeur transports you everywhere by car, waits between stops, you leave your things and new purchases in the car under supervision and do not carry them in your hands. You do not need to order a new car or taxi for each trip.

A personal chauffeur can drive cars of different classes and sizes: Economy, Business or Premium class; small cars, or comfortable sedans, vans for 6-8 passengers and even buses for 20 people. Naturally, all cars are equipped with air conditioning, wi-fi, drinking water and child seats if you need them.

Drivers know the local roads well and will always help choose the most optimal route for your trip, taking into account traffic jams, season and time of day. If necessary, you can change the route directly during the trip or add additional stops and places to visit.

Cost of car rental with a driver:

The cost of car rental with a driver depends on the class and type of car, as well as the number of hours ordered. You can rent a car for a minimum of 5 hours. However, if you need a chauffeur for 10-12 hours or for several days, the price will be lower (each specific order is considered separately). It should also be remembered that when renting a car with a driver there is a mileage limit. 10 hours of travel includes about 150 km of travel. If you need to travel further, this is paid additionally, approximately 5-10 euros for 1 additional kilometer (depending on the class of the car).

  • Economy sedan from 50 € per hour
  • Comfort sedan from 60 € per hour
  • Business sedan from 70 € per hour
  • Premium sedan from 120 € per hour
  • Comfort van from 60 € per hour
  • Business van from 80 € per hour
  • Premium van from 90 € per hour
  • Bus from 130 € per hour

7. Transfer time and road situation during trips from Geneva airport to Chamonix

The transfer time from Geneva airport to Chamonix is at least 1,3 h. But during the high tourist season, you can easily get into a big traffic jam, and at any time and on any part of the route. Thus, the transfer can take much more time, increasing up to +1,2 hours.

It is very important to take this into account when calculating the departure time from the hotel, so as not to be late for the flight. Also, if you are planning an important meeting, it is better to consult with our employee about how long the trip will take, so that the driver can bring you on time. The table below shows the main peak seasons and periods when trips can take longer than usual.

Road situation advice:
  • On weekdays (from Monday to Friday): in the morning (from 07:30 to 09:30) and in the evening (from 17:00 to 19:30) there are traffic jams because local residents go to work and return home.
  • Saturdays: traffic is especially difficult, as it is on Saturdays that the main check-in to hotels at ski resorts takes place. More tourists arrive and leave Chamonix on Saturday. Travel time can be 2 times longer.
  • The last Saturday of the year and the first Saturday of the year — on these two days, traffic jams on the roads are the biggest in the winter season. You can spend 6-10 hours in the car. We strongly recommend avoiding these days for trips.
  • European school holidays in February — check the start and end dates of the school holidays. On these days, many people drive to the mountains to ski, so long traffic jams form. It is better to travel a little earlier or later.

Official taxi for a trip from Geneva airport to Chamonix

A trip by official taxi from Geneva airport to Chamonix will cost approximately 420 CHF (sedan) or 530 CHF (for a minivan, if the group is 4-6 people or you have a lot of luggage). Unfortunately, it is impossible to know the exact price in advance, it depends on a large number of parameters. A taxi ride will take at least 1,3 h, but due to traffic jams the travel time may increase by another +1,2 hours.

Most taxi drivers make the trip along the A40 highway, and then along ordinary intercity roads, to the hotel itself. It is important to remember that when you travel by taxi, toll roads must be paid additionally.

You can take a taxi immediately after you leave the airport — cars are waiting near the terminal exit at a special taxi parking or taxi lane. If you are returning from Chamonix to Geneva airport, you can order a taxi at the hotel reception, by phone or find one in the city, at the taxi stand. However, in high season it is very difficult to get a free taxi — due to the large number of tourists, there are often not enough cars.

Taxi or private transfer from Geneva airport to Chamonix: which is better?

Many tourists believe that a taxi from Geneva airport to Chamonix is clearly inferior to a private transfer. A taxi is more expensive, the number of types and classes of cars is significantly smaller, and the level of comfort is quite low. The only advantage of a taxi is the possibility to arrive at the airport and immediately get into a taxi, without prior booking (however, in high season there are not enough cars).

Disadvantages of official taxi from Geneva airport to Chamonix:

  1. A taxi from Geneva airport to Chamonix is considered one of the most expensive types of transport. The cost of the trip usually starts from 420 CHF for a passenger car and from 530 CHF for a minivan (for 6 - 8 people). In high tourist season, the final cost may be even higher. For example, a private transfer costs from 190 EUR for an economy-class sedan and from 250 EUR for a van with a capacity of 8 passengers.
  2. One of the obvious disadvantages of a taxi is that you will be able to find out the final price only at the end of the trip, when you are delivered to the hotel. Since the cost depends on the distance, time of day, traffic jams, ski equipment, number of suitcases and other factors, you can only approximately assume its amount.
  3. Unlike a private transfer, you cannot choose the class or model of a taxi car. Usually, the passenger gets into the first available car that approaches him at the taxi stand.
  4. The condition and cleanliness of the cars may not be the most pleasant. Especially in high season, taxi drivers do not have time to wash the car often.
  5. For foreign tourists, the language barrier can also become an inconvenience. Not all taxi drivers speak English (mostly in their own language).
  6. Taxi drivers usually wait for passengers inside the car, at the official parking near the terminal, and do not meet them with a sign in the arrivals area. Therefore, you have to look for the car and carry the suitcases yourself.
  7. Families with small children should take into account that child seats are far from being available in all taxis. It is even more difficult to find a seat suitable for a specific age and height of the child.
  8. If you arrive with a large group (for example 6-10 people) or you have a lot of suitcases, finding a suitable large car can take a lot of time. Basically, taxis are small passenger cars, while vans and minivans are used much less often and they are quickly taken in high season.

Advantages of official taxi:

One of the undeniable advantages of a taxi is the possibility to take it immediately upon arrival, without prior booking. It is enough to leave the airport terminal and get into a car at the taxi stand next to the exit.

However, such an opportunity does not always exist. In high season, long queues of tourists and a small number of cars can often be found at the taxi stand. Waiting for a taxi can take 30–40 minutes, or even longer.

Taxi or private transfer (main differences):

Let's summarize and compare the main advantages and disadvantages of a taxi and a private transfer from Geneva airport to Chamonix. It is clearly visible that a transfer is a more comfortable and affordable service in terms of money, unlike a taxi.

10. Other important information about the transfer from Geneva airport to Chamonix:

To make your transfer as comfortable as possible, and the journey from Geneva airport to Chamonix take minimum time and not cause unnecessary trouble, we recommend reading the information below.

1) How to meet the driver at the airport or at the hotel

Meeting the driver at the airport:

The driver will wait for you in the arrivals area of Geneva airport with a sign on which your first or last name is indicated (or the option that you specified when booking the transfer). There are often many tourists at the airport (especially in high season), and some of them are also met by drivers with signs — so sometimes it can be difficult to find the right one. To make meeting the driver easier, our operator will send you his name and contact details in advance.

Driver meets passengers with a name sign for transfer from Geneva airport to Chamonix
Driver with a sign at the airport before transfer to Chamonix

The driver will help you with your luggage and accompany you to the car in the parking lot. When booking a transfer, we ask you to indicate the flight number — this is necessary so that the driver can track possible delays and adjust to the actual arrival time. As a rule, if the flight is delayed by no more than 1 hour, you will be met by the same driver who was assigned. If you arrive 2-3 hours later than the scheduled time, we will select another car for you, as your driver may already have another transfer starting by this time. In any case, our operators and driver are always in touch and adjust the transfer depending on changes to the flight.

The transfer price already includes 1 hour of waiting at the airport after the estimated landing time of the flight. If after arrival, you are delayed for more than 1 hour, then further waiting time is paid additionally — approximately 60-90 euros per hour, depending on the class of the car (the operator will tell you the exact cost when booking the transfer). If you need to stop at a shop, restaurant or meeting on the way, this waiting time is also paid separately.

Meeting the driver at the hotel or apartment:

If you are traveling back from the hotel to the airport or to another city, the driver will meet you at the reception with a sign and help with your suitcases. Some hotels and apartments do not have parking (especially in the city center) — in this case, the driver waits for passengers in the car and drives up to the doors immediately before boarding, stopping for only a couple of minutes. The transfer price includes 15-20 minutes of waiting at the hotel from the agreed departure time. Further, an additional payment of 60-90 euros per hour will also be required.

Travelers' advice about meeting the driver:
  • We strongly recommend turning on roaming on your phone in advance and contacting the driver via WhatsApp one day before the transfer. This is necessary so that you and the driver can find each other faster and without unnecessary trouble. On the day of the transfer, send your geolocation to the driver via WhatsApp — this way he will be able to easily find you, even if you do not notice the sign.
  • If after meeting at the airport or hotel you need an additional stop (for example, for shopping or to visit a tourist attraction), inform the operator in advance. Send all the addresses where you need to stop at least one day in advance, and preferably earlier. If you change the route on the day of the trip, the driver may not have time to adjust to the changes, as he already has the next transfer planned, for which we will not always be able to find a replacement.

2) What you need to know about luggage when booking a transfer

Suitcases, a ski bag and other passenger luggage loaded into the trunk of a Mercedes V-Class for a transfer from Geneva airport to ChamonixSuitcases and a ski bag in the trunk of a Mercedes V-Class

Please pay close attention to the luggage information when booking your transfer from Geneva airport to Chamonix. Please describe to our operator in as much detail as possible how many suitcases you have, what size they are, and whether they are soft or hard-shell. Also let us know if you are travelling with skis or snowboards and the length of their bags. Please describe all hand luggage in detail as well — one small bag takes up almost no space, but 5-10 such bags can make a noticeable difference. If you are travelling with a pet, please let us know in advance so that we can take the size of its carrier into account and assign a driver who is not allergic to that type of animal.

It is important for us to know the exact dimensions of your luggage in advance so that we can choose a vehicle with enough space for both you and all your belongings. Otherwise, some of your suitcases may simply not fit, and you may have to carry them by hand or order a second vehicle at an additional cost — and two small vehicles will always cost more in total than one large van.

Standard suitcase sizes:

Suitcase dimensions can be described by height, width and depth (these are the measurements you should provide to our operator). Suitcases are usually divided into several categories according to size: S, M, L and XL. Sizes may vary slightly between manufacturers, but the following dimensions are the most common:

  • Size S (small suitcase): height 48-53 cm, width 32-35 cm, depth 20-23 cm.
  • Size M (medium suitcase): height 58-63 cm, width 39-42 cm, depth 23-26 cm.
  • Size L (large suitcase): height 65-70 cm, width 47-50 cm, depth 26-29 cm.
  • Size XL (extra-large suitcase): height 74-80 cm, width 51-54 cm, depth 30-32 cm.

Hand luggage and other items:

In addition to suitcases, passengers often travel with bags, backpacks, shopping bags, sports equipment (skis, snowboards, ski boots, helmets and poles), children's toys, musical instruments, pet carriers, wheelchairs and much more. All of these items must also be mentioned when booking your transfer, as they can sometimes take up even more space than the suitcases themselves. Unfortunately, we have had tourists arrive with considerably more luggage than they originally declared. As a result, they had to order a second vehicle, and when our vehicles were already occupied, some clients had to order a taxi specifically to transport several suitcases — which turned out to be very expensive.

Travel tip about luggage:
Photo of clients' luggage and skis sent to the driver to check whether everything will fit in the vehiclePhoto of luggage and ski bags sent by a passenger before the transfer

It is not always easy to determine the size of a suitcase or whether a large suitcase should be classified as L or XL. The same applies to bags and backpacks. Ski and snowboard bags can be especially difficult to assess, as some are very long and have a rigid frame, making them particularly difficult to fit into a vehicle and taking up a lot of space. In such cases, it is better to send our operator a photo of all your suitcases, ski and snowboard bags and other bags together — this will allow us to estimate their actual total volume and choose a vehicle with a suitable luggage compartment.

3) Traveling with children: child seats and what you need to know

Child car seat and booster installed on the rear seat of the car for transfer
Child car seat and booster installed before family transfer

If you are traveling with small children, be sure to inform our operator about this when booking the transfer. Each child must travel in their own separate seat — holding them in your arms is strictly prohibited. If the child's height is less than 1.5 m, according to European traffic rules, they must be provided with an appropriate child car seat.

If you order a car for four passengers, indicate that this is a transfer for 4 adults. If in fact 4 adults plus a small child are traveling — then you will have to order a second car or change it to a van. Unfortunately, this sometimes happens.

What types of child seats are there:

Below is a table with the types of child seats. It will be useful for you when preparing for the transfer.

Table for choosing a child car seat for a private transfer
Child's weight Approximate age Recommended type of seat
Up to 13 kg 0-18 months Child car seat (group 0 / 0+)
9-18 kg 1-4 years Child car seat (group 1)
15-25 kg 3-7 years Child car seat (group 2)
22-36 kg 6-12 years Booster or high-back booster (group 3)
Travelers' advice about child seats:

If you are traveling with a baby under 1 year old, it is better to take your own carrycot with you — it is more convenient to carry the child at the airport and after the transfer. But if you take your own carrycot, be sure to say this when booking. Otherwise, the driver may bring our carrycot as well, and this is extra volume in the trunk, as a result one of your suitcases may not fit.

4) How to choose the right car for the transfer?

Two types of cars perform a transfer to Chamonix
Two Business and Comfort class cars perform a transfer from Geneva airport to Chamonix

Choosing the right car is, perhaps, one of the most important moments when preparing for a trip. It depends on how comfortably you will get there, whether there will be enough seats for all passengers and whether all your luggage will fit. Usually, when choosing a car, attention is paid to two parameters: the capacity of the car and its class.

Car capacity:

For transfers from Geneva airport to Chamonix, different types of cars are available: sedans, SUVs, vans and buses.

Small passenger cars are suitable for 1-4 passengers with a moderate amount of luggage (usually 1-2 large suitcases and 1-2 small ones, plus bags). These include Volkswagen Jetta, Ford Focus, Skoda Octavia and similar models.

Large sedans and SUVs. Four passengers will be comfortably accommodated in them. The cabin is more spacious, and more things will fit in the trunk (two-three large suitcases plus hand luggage). These are Volkswagen Passat, Skoda Kodiaq and similar models.

Vans and minivans are designed for 5-8 passengers (although they are often booked by 1-2 people — simply for the sake of space). Such cars are often ordered precisely because of the large number of suitcases and bags. At the same time, their trunks are different: the most spacious one is the Renault Trafic Extralong (up to 8 XL suitcases plus hand luggage), Volkswagen Caravelle Extralong has a similar volume. Versions with a short or simply long body fit less luggage. Mercedes vans have more compact trunks, even in the Extralong version. Mercedes V-Class accommodates up to 7 passengers, and in some configurations — 4-6: the seats are more comfortable, but there are fewer of them. Renault Trafic and Volkswagen Caravelle take up to 8 passengers plus the ninth seat — the driver's seat.

Buses are needed for large groups — 10, 14, 20, 40 and even 50 people. For example, Mercedes Sprinter or Scania. But a large bus may not be able to reach every hotel: sometimes only smaller cars can pass through the narrow old streets of the center of Chamonix or along a winding mountain road, so instead of one bus, 2-4 vans are used.

Car class:

The second parameter when choosing a car for a transfer is the class of the car. For many passengers, it becomes the main one at all.

Economy class — the most affordable transfer option. These include small cars of inexpensive brands. Suitable for those who do not care so much about making an impression — as they say, "just get there". These are Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf. However, sometimes when ordering Economy, a higher-class car arrives — if your transfer coincides in time with another order.

Comfort class — this is already a more spacious cabin, better sound insulation and higher-quality materials and equipment. These include: Volkswagen Passat, Tesla Model S, Toyota Camry, as well as Renault Trafic and Volkswagen Caravelle vans.

Business class is chosen by passengers who value status and comfort, as well as those who are simply used to good cars. For them — Mercedes E-Class and Mercedes Vito vans.

Premium class — the most comfortable and spacious cars. The best finishing materials, space, technical equipment and smooth ride. Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7, Audi A8 sedans, as well as Mercedes V-Class vans (in different cabin configurations).

Tell our operator about your preferences, and we will select the optimal car for your transfer from Geneva airport to Chamonix. It is better to book the car in advance — then there is a better chance of getting the required class and size at the best price.

Travelers' advice on choosing a car:

Some tourists think that vans and minivans are used only for large groups of passengers. In fact, if you are traveling as a couple or alone, a van is also very convenient, especially the Mercedes V-Class. The seats in it are located opposite each other, so you can recline the backrest and stretch your legs onto the opposite seat, or even lie across all three seats and sleep during the trip. If the road is long, this is an excellent way to pass the time and gain strength before the flight or check-in at the hotel. Also, if you are arriving with your own skis and snowboards (especially in large bags), then fitting into a passenger car is not always possible.

5) What is the best way to get from Geneva airport to Chamonix: train, bus, car rental, private transfer or helicopter?

Above on this page, we have already discussed the difference between a transfer and a taxi when traveling from Geneva airport to Chamonix. But it is better to know how to get there by other types of transport: train, bus, car rental or helicopter. Let’s briefly look at their features — in general, they are similar for most European cities.

Train or transfer:

The train is, without a doubt, a convenient way of getting around. Usually it is 5-8 times cheaper than a transfer. Traffic jams are not a problem for it, because it travels on its own tracks. But first you need to get to the train from the airport by tram or bus. And most importantly — the train will never take you directly to the hotel door, wherever it is located: from the station you will still have to change to another transport. In the mountains, it is generally a great rarity when the train comes close to the ski resort, usually 40-60 km of mountain road remains. In addition, the train has a strict schedule. For example, it will not be possible to leave by train at night, even if you need to get to the airport earlier for your flight.

Bus or transfer:

Bus takes passengers in winter along a mountain road from Geneva airport to Chamonix
In the winter season, a bus takes passengers in the mountains from Geneva airport to Chamonix

The bus is a popular option for many tourists, including those traveling from Geneva airport to Chamonix. First of all, this is due to the low price — it is approximately the same as the train. But the price, perhaps, is the only advantage of the bus over a private transfer.

The bus also will not take you directly from the airport to the hotel — you will have to change to another bus, and at the end also walk with suitcases. In traffic jams, the bus travels almost as long as a car ordered for a transfer. And since the bus makes many stops along the way and enters different cities, the journey often takes twice as long as by transfer. And you are unlikely to be able to get on the bus immediately after leaving the plane. Buses run according to a schedule, which means you can wait at the stop for 10 minutes or even 2 hours — it depends on how lucky you are with the schedule.

Helicopter or transfer:

Flying by helicopter from Geneva airport to Chamonix is elegant, fast and comfortable. But, firstly, the price is usually noticeably higher than a transfer. Secondly, it will most often not be possible to fly directly to the hotel (not every hotel has its own helipad) — you will have to land at the nearest one, and then continue by transfer to the hotel. Thirdly, the flight may be cancelled due to bad weather, and in the mountains this happens very often.

Car rental or private transfer:

Renting a car and driving to Chamonix yourself seems like a cheap and convenient option. But in reality, everything turns out to be more expensive than it seems at first glance. Renting a car makes almost no sense if you are going to spend your entire vacation in Chamonix and do not plan trips to neighboring cities or ski resorts. In addition to the rental itself, you will have to pay for parking, insurance, petrol and toll roads. In the end, this will cost at least the price of two transfers (there and back). And there will also be the hassle of parking and processing the car, plus you will have to drive on unfamiliar snowy roads and stand in traffic jams in the middle of the tourist season, put chains on the wheels yourself in the middle of the road. And after the vacation, you may receive serious fines for violating traffic rules. No one is protected from this when driving around unfamiliar cities.

Let's compare the ways to get to Chamonix:

11. Uber from Geneva airport to Chamonix: prices and availability.

Uber car brought passengers to the ski resort Chamonix
Uber car arrived with passengers in Chamonix

Some tourists get from Geneva airport to Chamonix via Uber. This is a fairly popular service that travelers use in many countries. But it is important to understand that it is far from suitable for everyone.

Uber prices:

If you look in the application, there may seem to be a quite pleasant price to Chamonix. But in fact, it can increase, and quite seriously.

Firstly, the price may change already when you arrive in Geneva airport and open the application to order a car. Uber does not have a fixed price — it depends on demand at a particular moment, the time of day, the road situation and how many drivers are available at that moment.

Secondly, the price may change directly during the trip — that is, already after you have ordered the car and started driving. If there is a serious traffic jam on the way (and in high season this is almost always the case), the cost of the transfer will increase by the end of the trip. And it is impossible to say in advance by exactly how much.

If we take the return transfer — from the hotel in Chamonix back to the airport — the price in Uber may be different, and sometimes 15-20% higher (this should also be taken into account).

Uber availability in high season:

Another important point: in high season, it is not so easy to find an available Uber car, sometimes you have to wait for a long time — there are more people wanting to leave than available drivers.

A car that meets your requirements may also not be available. For example, all Economy class cars may be occupied, and only a more expensive option can be ordered. Vans for large groups may also all be taken. And if you are traveling with children, the availability of child seats in the cars is also not guaranteed by anyone.

If you cannot find the sign because of the large number of tourists, simply write to your driver on WhatsApp. Our operators will also be in touch with you and help you find him.

What if my flight is delayed or I arrive earlier?

The driver tracks your flight through the application and will arrive at the actual landing time of the plane. If the flight is delayed by more than 1 hour from the scheduled time, there is a possibility that another driver will meet you (if the original driver is busy). If your flight time has changed, please inform your driver as soon as possible.

What should I do if I am late or cannot find my driver?

The driver will be waiting for you at the exit of the arrivals area, so please do not go outside or go to another floor of the terminal. This will make it more difficult to find you. Simply write or call our operator or the driver on WhatsApp, and we will help you find each other.

What should I do if I have arrived but my luggage has been lost?

Inform the driver about this so that he does not wait for you unnecessarily with a sign at the exit of the arrivals area. After you complete the lost luggage report (Property Irregularity Report) at the Lost & Found service, contact the driver and he will meet you. For additional waiting time (more than 1 hour after the plane lands), you will need to pay an additional 60-90 euros per hour, depending on the class of the car.

How much waiting time is included in the transfer price?

The transfer price includes 1 hour of waiting at the airport after the plane lands (for some vehicles, for example Mercedes Sprinter, the waiting time starts after the scheduled arrival time). Waiting beyond this time costs an additional 60-90 euros per hour, depending on the make of the car.

Can I stop at a shop, restaurant or pick up the keys to my apartment on the way from Geneva airport to Chamonix?

Yes, you can stop at a shop, restaurant or pick up the keys to your apartment on the way to Chamonix. But this is paid additionally, tell our operator what you need and he will tell you the price. Please inform us about any route changes in advance: the driver may have subsequent scheduled transfers. If you tell us about an additional stop already during the trip, the driver may simply not have the opportunity to do it.

How do I choose a car for the transfer so that all the luggage definitely fits in the trunk?

Tell our operator in advance about all your suitcases and their sizes, as well as bags, sports equipment and other things. Indicate the number of adults and children among the passengers. We will send you options for cars where everything will definitely fit, and you will choose the option that suits you in terms of price and comfort level.

Can I hold a child in my arms so that more passengers can fit in the car?

No, according to traffic rules, children cannot be held in your arms. Every passenger (both adult and child) must travel in their own separate seat. Children under 150 cm tall must also sit in a suitable child seat or booster.

Therefore, the price of the transfer will depend on which car you travel in, and not on how much luggage you put in it.

Will the skis and all the luggage fit in the car?
